Council of Europe gives Türkiye until 14 October to report steps on Kavala's release

The Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers told Türkiye on 21 September to detail, by 14 October, what steps it has taken or plans to secure the release of jailed philanthropist Osman Kavala, calling the proceedings against him 'flagrantly unjust and politically motivated.' Kavala has been held since October 2017, originally over the 2013 Gezi Park protests, despite three European Court of Human Rights judgments ordering his release. The committee will review Türkiye's response at its December meeting.
