Romania on energy alert: Dacia and Ford halt production as drought cripples power supply

Dacia and Ford Otosan are suspending production at their Romanian plants until August 19 (saving around 200 megawatts) after the government declared an energy alert for all of August: severe drought and record-low Danube levels are keeping Unit 1 of the Cernavodă nuclear plant offline. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has secured voluntary consumption cuts from some eighty large industrial users, especially during evening peaks. That climate-driven water scarcity is now closing car factories in an EU country is a warning signal for the Union's energy resilience, and a politically sensitive loss of output.
