Court places disaster charity AHBAP under state control and begins winding it up

The İstanbul 8th Criminal Court of Peace has handed AHBAP, its assets and affiliated entities to the state Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF), frozen its accounts and begun dissolution proceedings, the daily BirGün reported. Prosecutors are examining allegations that donations raised after the 6 February 2023 earthquakes were moved to private accounts; founder and musician Haluk Levent and 27 other suspects have been jailed since mid-July and all deny wrongdoing. Speaking at a conference in Ankara on Tuesday, Erdoğan said those who engaged in political and economic opportunism after the earthquake were now answering to justice, without citing evidence.
