Türkiye set to nominate Sinirlioğlu for UN secretary-general

Ankara expects to formally announce Feridun Sinirlioğlu, a veteran diplomat and former foreign minister, as its candidate for UN secretary-general on Friday, after Thursday's Security Council straw poll. He would be the eighth candidate in a race where the Council's five permanent members have not agreed on anyone across six polls so far. President Erdoğan told fellow leaders the next secretary-general “must have the vision and experience to make the U.N. once again the center of multilateralism and to effectively carry out the necessary reforms.”
