Drought forces Poland to cut coal output as the Vistula runs low

Utility Enea was forced on August 4 to cut generation at the Kozienice and Połaniec coal plants after critically low water levels in the Vistula limited cooling water supplies. Euronews reports this removed 1.3 GW from Poland's power system, about two per cent of national capacity. Flow near Kozienice fell to 135 cubic metres per second on August 5, while the plant's cooling system withdraws 80 to 100 cubic metres per second from the river. According to the energy think tank Ember, coal supplies 51 per cent of Poland's electricity and wind and solar 25 per cent.
