EU home affairs ministers rally behind Spain after Ceuta as Brunner says Europe passed the test
At an emergency video conference, EU interior ministers expressed "full solidarity" with Spain after around 70,000 non-EU nationals entered the enclave of Ceuta from Morocco within 24 hours. Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner called the crisis a test of European resilience and said Europe had passed it: people did not manage to enter the Schengen area, and security at the border was resolved quickly. Ministers agreed on the need for measures against smuggling networks, stronger returns, reinforced EU borders and early-warning systems including social media monitoring. The meeting was meant to lower the political temperature after Italy ordered a temporary suspension of Schengen free movement with Spain and 22 EU governments wrote to the institutions criticising Madrid's migration policies.
