Hungary shuts down its only nuclear plant as the Danube hits record lows

Prime Minister Peter Magyar said the Paks plant, which supplies nearly half of Hungary's electricity, was powered down on Sunday, the first full shutdown in its 44 years. Output had fallen to 965 megawatts on Friday and to 240 overnight, against a normal 2,000, after low water levels stopped the pumps drawing enough cooling water from the Danube. More than a hundred Hungarian towns and villages are under water-use restrictions, and Slovakia's prime minister Robert Fico said his country was monitoring the power situation closely and was ready to help.
