The tax inspection board found more than 2.84 billion lira moving through the companies' accounts between January 2024 and July 2026, of which about 918 million was collected from more than 41,000 people. András Baka, former head of Hungary's supreme court and for 17 years a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, was elected on Tuesday by 140 votes to six. He was removed from the supreme court in 2011 after publicly criticising Orbán's judicial reforms. The post fell vacant after Peter Magyar's Tisza party, which holds a two-thirds majority, pushed through the removal of his predecessor. Baka takes office on 19 August.
The president said on Tuesday that Ukraine had handed over proposals for a plan to end the war, without setting out what they contain. He also warned that Russia may use next month's parliamentary election as a pretext for a new mobilisation, and asked for air defence and heavier sanctions pressure. The US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were last in Moscow in January and have not yet visited Kyiv.
The British government confirmed on Monday that much of the country is now formally in drought after one of the driest springs and summers on record. Hosepipe bans and restrictions apply to millions of households, and officials warn of the strain on farming and on rivers. It is the most widespread drought in England since 2022.
The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus on Tuesday found the deposed president guilty of premeditated murder, torture and crimes against humanity. The session was carried live on state television and the verdict is the first against Assad or his inner circle since the family's five decades in power ended. His brother Maher al-Assad and his cousin Atef Najib were sentenced to death in the same case. Both brothers are in Russia.
The annual exercise runs to 27 August with about 18,000 South Korean troops, roughly the same number as last year. It has been expanded with training against drones, GPS jamming and cyberattacks, explicitly drawing on the war in Ukraine. The security service says Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SVR, used two officers to recruit an agent at another foreign embassy in Stockholm. The purpose was to influence Swedish political decisions and to discredit Sweden, the EU and NATO. All three have diplomatic immunity and have left the country, so none can be prosecuted here.
The Sweden Democrats leader said on Tuesday that he would allocate exactly zero to integration measures and that the responsibility lies with the individual. He does not expect major migration reforms in the next term either, pointing out that Sweden already has Europe's most restrictive asylum legislation. The general election is on 13 September.
