Sweden Democrats refuse apology to the Sami after truth commission's report
The Truth Commission for the Sami people, which handed over its final report on 30 September after a five-year investigation into historical abuses by the state and church, including forced relocations, children separated from parents and language suppression, repeated its call for an official apology. The Sweden Democrats' Martin Kinnunen rejected the demand on October 3, saying “our starting point is that we don't wish to meet this demand.” The Left Party and the Greens back the commission's proposal, while the Moderates and Christian Democrats have taken no clear position; commission chair Lena Nyberg has separately warned that several parties' plans to strip reindeer herding of its protected status as a national interest, to allow new mines, “sound ominous” and run against the commission's recommendations.
