Sweden's new parliament convenes as coalition talks fray over choice of speaker

The parliament elected on 13 September convenes on 28 September to elect a speaker and hear Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson report on her progress forming a government, within the 28-day mandate speaker Andreas Norlén gave her on 17 September. The task grew harder after the Left Party said it would back Norlén for another term as speaker rather than a Social Democrat, a move one former Social Democrat official called 'a declaration of war' against the left bloc's one-seat majority (176 of 349 seats).
