Germany cuts fuel tax and prepares a price cap as Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern vote today

Germany will cut the tax on petrol and diesel by about seventeen cents a litre from October to the end of the year, and is separately preparing the country's first fuel price cap, tied to the oil price, after pump prices hit a record 2.286 euros a litre this week. The tax cut lands on the same day, Sunday 20 September, that the states of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern hold elections, where Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU is expected to lose ground to the AfD.
