European court orders Türkiye to free Osman Kavala, voids conviction

The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that Türkiye must release Osman Kavala immediately and declared his life sentence null and void. The Grand Chamber found Türkiye had violated six Convention rights, including the right to a fair trial and freedom of expression, and the court called the Gezi Park trial a flagrant denial of justice. It is the third ruling in the case since 2019 that Türkiye has not enforced; the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers now oversees compliance.
