US envoy says Israel struck Syria without warning Turkey, suggests it meant to bait Ankara

US special envoy Tom Barrack said Israel struck a Syrian air base near the Turkish border on 19 August without warning Washington or Ankara, and suggested the raid may have been meant to bait Turkey into a clash. Israeli defence minister Israel Katz rejected the account as "full of inaccuracies" and at odds with the White House's own position. Turkey called the strike reckless and denied it had planned to deploy troops at the base.
