Fidan says Egypt could join the Mecca defence pact

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday that Egypt could join the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, and that several other countries have expressed interest. The pact was signed on 7 August by Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. Fidan described the machinery as technically similar to NATO's Article 5, with a ministers' committee, political and military committees and a permanent secretariat based in Saudi Arabia.
