Opposition and legal scholars attack the draft PKK peace law over due process

The 12-article bill, tabled on Wednesday by the AKP and its ally the MHP, would suspend investigations, prosecutions and prison sentences for many PKK-related offences once the group's disbandment and disarmament are officially confirmed, excluding intentional killings and certain other serious crimes. New Party leader Özgür Özel said other parties received the text only shortly before submission, after ruling-alliance deputies had already signed it, calling the procedure contrary to the spirit of the process. He restated his support for ending the conflict but wants legal steps paired with broader democratic reform.
