Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp becomes a UNESCO World Heritage site

The vast Okefenokee wetland in the US state of Georgia has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, the first natural site in the United States to be added in over 30 years. The swamp is one of the world's largest freshwater ecosystems, and its largely undisturbed peat beds preserve a 5,000-year record of environmental change. The designation makes it Georgia's first World Heritage site and the first US National Wildlife Refuge to receive the honor.
