Ceuta death toll rises to 72 after the mass crossing from Morocco

At least 72 people have died since around 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta beginning last Thursday; five more bodies were found along the coast on Sunday and more than 1,000 people have been treated by health services. Spanish authorities say more than 48,000 returned to Morocco within 48 hours, while Morocco's interior ministry confirms eleven deaths and blames the crossings on social media misinformation, trafficking networks and a misreading of a Spanish ruling on immediate returns. The crisis has led 22 EU member states to call for coordinated border action and Italy to suspend passport-free Schengen travel from Spain.
