Voting from abroad has opened for the Swedish election, but its weight is disputed

Swedes living abroad have been able to vote in the autumn general election since Thursday, July 30, and several parties, among them the Sweden Democrats, the Moderates and the Greens, have put campaign resources into the group from the Costa del Sol to London. Around 220,000 Swedes abroad are eligible, but turnout in the group has run at about 30 percent and the political scientist Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson expects 70,000 to 80,000 votes from abroad. He notes that the 2022 election was decided by some 46,000 votes, but that more than 400,000 first-time voters count for more; the main effect of overseas ballots is that they are counted late and can shift seats after election night.
