Sweden Democrat leader Åkesson steps into party clash over who counts as Swedish

Jimmie Åkesson stepped into a public rift inside his own Sweden Democrats after MP Richard Jomshof argued that ethnic and biological ties should define who counts as Swedish, a view senior party figure Mattias Karlsson rejected. Writing in Expressen, Åkesson backed an open definition: anyone can become Swedish by learning the language and adopting its culture and values, regardless of birthplace. He dismissed internal critics as self-appointed ideological guardians and credited the party's rise to keeping politics separate from ideology.
