Germany and Russia's top diplomats hold first face-to-face talks since the 2022 invasion

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met Russia's Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on 26 September, their first direct talks since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Wadephul called on Moscow to abandon its "dangerous path of escalation" toward Europe and NATO; Lavrov rejected the description and accused Germany of becoming Ukraine's main military sponsor.
